Archbold, OH – From setting up a wigwam and competing in a
spelling bee to gardening, churning butter and enjoying traditional
music – on Saturday, May 8th guests of all ages will be celebrating
“Spring on the Farm” at Sauder Village. Again this year, a full day of
engaging activities will allow guests to experience what life on an Ohio
farm was like more than 100 years ago.
The festive sound of folk music and children’s laughs of delight will
fill the air as guests have fun learning about the past while creating
special memories together. Activities planned throughout the day will
let young and old experience first-hand what life was like in rural Ohio
from 1803 through 1910. In the historic homes there will be butter to
churn, rugs to beat, soap to grate and windows to wash. Guests can help
with planting in the historic gardens, wash clothes and join in an
old-fashioned spelldown in the schoolhouse.
“Spring on the Farm is the first in our series of “farm days” at the
Historic Village,” shared Kim Krieger, PR/Media Relations Specialist.
“These fun-filled days offer families the opportunity to experience how
activities on the farm change with the season. Guests are encouraged to
come back for Summer on the Farm on July 10 and Fall on the Farm on
October 9.”
Performances by special guest Bob Ford will also be a highlight of this
popular event. A folk musician from Cedarville, Ohio, Bob Ford has been
a favorite performer in the Historic Village for many years. Bob brings
history to life through songs and stories. Weather permitting he will
perform at throughout the day on the Village Green.
“Bob Ford’s light-hearted performances always bring smiles and laughter
from the crowd,” Krieger shared. “His relaxed folk-song performance
captivates audiences of all ages.”
In the barnyard area, guests can watch sheep shearing demonstrations and
there will be new baby animals in the historic barn. At Natives and
Newcomers visitors will smell the smoke of the cooking fires as they
step inside the wigwams and Trading Post to hear the stories of the
Native Americans and Europeans who lived in Northwest Ohio in the early
1800s. Children can try to make cordage and can join with others to help
set up a wigwam.
There are also a variety of hands-on activities planned at Pioneer
Settlement, the new 5-acre addition that opened late last summer.
Costumed guides will be using the new outdoor bake oven near the Witmer-Roth
home and at the Stuckey farmhouse guests can help make violet jelly.
Weather permitting, the sawmill will be in operation and guests can help
with historic farming - using the harrow to help work ground.
Historic Sauder Village is open Tuesday through Friday from 10:00
a.m.-3:30 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. and each Sunday
