Dear Quilting Friends,
I’ve been sitting at my computer for over an
hour without writing a single word! Actually, I got so involved in
the books and magazines I want to review for you, that I quit
scanning through them and just started reading
everything. The quilting and sewing world is certainly not lacking
in creativity! The new issue of Quilter’s Home magazine
is, as usual, filled with off-the-wall humor as well as
interesting articles and even a few quilting patterns. In “The
Dope on Soap” article 13 different laundry soaps were tested to
see how they affected quilts after 20 washings and dryings. Check
out this article to see how your quilt care product compares to
the rest. I’ll give you a hint - the clear winner (in all three
scents) is in stock at Threads of Tradition!
In the Shop
The
DIY (Do It Yourself) movement is alive and well among teens and
young adults. Two new books will have great appeal for these
creative minds. If your wardrobe needs an upgrade, Altered
Clothing shows you how to transform basic, out-of-date or
vintage garments and accessories into new custom fashions with a DIY twist. Featuring tips and tricks from a fashion professional,
these transformations require minimal investment and allow you to
reinvent your entire wardrobe. Rather than buy new mass-produced
items, take what you already have in your closet or find at the
thrift store and create not only a fashion statement, but also a
proclamation of individual style.
Even
if you’ve never sewn a stitch before, Pattern Free Fashions and
Accessories will teach you all you need to know to make 15
great fashions, accessories and room accents - for yourself and
your friends. You’ll find the basics you need in the early
chapters and then you’re on your way. Each project has
step-by-step photos and instruction so you learn as you go. For
those of us who already love sewing, what a great way to pass on
our love of creating with needle and thread to the next generation
of sewers.
Step
into your own gorgeous landscape scenes by using the incredible
texture, color and pattern that fabric provides. There are no
tricky technical techniques in Points of View, Landscape Quilts
to Stitch and Embellish - simplicity is the goal in these
artful, small-scale representations of nature’s scenery. Nine
step-by-step projects feature easy elements that focus on fabric -
the “paint” for your textile landscapes. Take the elements from
these projects to create your own original landscape designs!
Crazy
for Red, Flowers of Blessing, Thank You God for Everything and
Baby Girl are four precious patterns designed by Tricia
Cribbs for her book Redwork Quilts. But even better than
the darling embroidery designs are the four different pieced
“frames” or borders that really set off
these quilts. If you love redwork, but don’t have the inclination
to do all that hand stitching, combine the settings in this book
with our new Redworks fabric from Windham. Red designs
printed on antique white background and red print coordinates make
great faux redwork that will stitch up quickly!
Coffee
lovers everywhere will crave the brand new Spill the Beans
fabrics for chef aprons, quilts and home decorating projects. Colorful
coffee cups are tipped, ready to sip in printed squares and also
dance in a whimsical border print. Spill the Beans Swirls come in
all the bright colors that coordinate with the coffee cups. A free
pattern for the lap-size quilt, Java Jive can be downloaded
at
www.clothworkstextiles.com. We have included the pattern in
the kits we have cut and packaged so you won’t have to search the
Internet for the pattern or the shop to find all the perfect
fabric choices.

Debbie
Beaves of the Violet Patch has designed several fantastic patterns
for her new Bella Rosa fabrics. Working in her signature
colors of violet, green and beige, this group combines several
sizes of rosebud prints, a printed stripe, a check and tone-on-tone prints for a very versatile and attractive look.

Other
new fabric arrivals include the long-awaited Cover
Stories by Thimbleberries. These printed panels have a
traditional pieced Thimbleberries look. Shown here are the
two panels we have in stock: Sweet Dreams and St. Nick.
Coordinates are also available to add borders or sew other
matching items for your home.
For the
Little Ones

New
babies and children inspire many of us to look for ways to stitch
up expressions of our love for them. Recent arrivals for
children’s gifts or projects include Jack and Jill teddy bear
and lightweight flannel receiving blanket sets,
RJR’s Tiny Treasures printed panels for pillows,
wallhangings, or door knob hangers, and
Moda’s
boxed set of nostalgic Learn to Sew Lace Up Cards
that come with plastic needles and yarn to provide a wonderful
first sewing experience for busy little fingers. So whether you
are looking for a sewing project or a finished gift all ready to
go, we have something for everyone.
Upcoming
Events
Even though we’ve been enjoying summer-like
weather this week, fall has arrived and we are busy planning
autumn activities. Our Quilters Retreat will be held at the
Sauder Heritage Inn on October 19-20 and we would still be glad to
make room for you! Call us for more information or to register and
join us for two days of fun, laughter and making new friends. Oh,
and don’t forget to bring your latest unfinished quilting
projects!
Our End of The Season Sale is set for
Wednesday, October 31 – Saturday November 3. It’s a great time to
stock up on some bargains at Threads of Traditions as well as in
the Gift Shop and General Store. We will have hundreds of bolts of
fabric at discounted prices as well as other great buys, so plan to
stop in early in the
week
for the best selection!
Other Threads of Tradition events in October
include the Saturday Sampler Reunion at 9:00 AM on
Saturday, October 13. This reunion is a show-and-tell time for
everyone who has their Saturday Sampler quilt top pieced together,
but anyone is welcome to come - even if you have never attended a
Saturday
Sampler
demonstration. It’s always amazing to see the great variety of
quilts that are designed by the creative ladies in our group and
they would be the first to tell you that if they can do it, you
can too! A new Saturday Sampler series begins on January 12; both
beginners and more advanced quilters are encouraged to join in
this learning experience!
Fall
is a great time to take a class and learn a new skill or brush up
on the finer points of quilting. October classes are listed on our
website and our new class brochure for the
months
of November-February includes a wide variety of educational
opportunities from Bargello quilts to English Paper Piecing and
much more. Extra brochures are available at Threads of Tradition
and information about all our classes is also available on our
website
www.saudervillage.org so be sure to scan through the list and
choose your favorite class or classes.
At the end of October, Glora Belle and I will
be traveling to Houston, Texas for the International Quilt
Market. We try to attend Market each fall to keep up with the
latest trends in quilting, to order the latest fabrics and to find
vendors with creative ideas and products that will make quilting
easier and more rewarding for you. It’s always a great time and we
come home with so many new ideas and projects that we hardly know
where to begin!
As
you can see, October promises to be a busy month at Threads of
Tradition. We hope you will join us for any or all of the
experiences we have planned. Sharing our passion for quilting
doubles the pleasure and encourages all of us to accept the next
challenge.
Keep on stitching!
