Dear Quilting Friends,

Summer has flown by unbelievably fast and schools are back in full swing. We do welcome the cooler weather and lower humidity of September, but somehow still mourn the end of summer. But the end of one good thing is always the beginning of another and we are looking forward to autumn events at Threads of Tradition.

Quilter's Road Show

Passports are now available to purchase for this exciting shop hop scheduled for October 14 -16. The seven shops are the same as last year, with all of them having good access from the Ohio Turnpike for easy driving during the colorful autumn weather. For the $10.00 purchase price, you will receive your passport to fun and inspiration, as well as a handy notions caddy. When you visit each shop during the shop hop, you will receive a free original pattern for a total of seven patterns and the notions caddy, all for only $10.00! Plus, think of all the fun you will have spending a day with your best quilting friends. It’s a win-win situation for everyone! The pattern for the lap-size quilt pictured here will be Threads of Tradition’s gift to you when you visit us during the Road Show Shop Hop. Sixty Degrees All Around the Square was designed by Sharon Moore and makes use of some simple techniques to create a design that is easier to piece than it looks. For those of you who decide you want some help piecing this original quilt, Sharon will be offering a class on this pattern in February.

Saturday Sampler 2011

Our 2010 Saturday Sampler met for its last regular session in August. On October 9, at
9:00 am we are planning the Saturday Sampler Reunion where participants bring in their quilt tops or partially completed quilt tops to show to the rest of the group. It is a great time of inspiration to see how many different looks can be achieved with the same sampler blocks. If you were part of the 2010 Saturday Sampler, we hope you will come and show your quilt for everyone’s benefit. Or, if you have not participated but are curious about our Saturday Sampler program, you are encouraged to join us at the reunion on October 9 to see what it is all about.

The 2011 Saturday Sampler will begin on January 8 with instruction at both 8:00 and 9:00 am. Please pre-register in the shop or on the online class registration form for the color options of your choice: red/white/cream, small country prints with a traditional look, or hand painted designs by Marcia Derse in all the colors on the color wheel for a more contemporary look. Take your pick, or choose to make all three! We have not yet made our final choice on the pattern we will be using since we are hoping to find something new and very exciting when we go to Quilt Market in October, but we are looking for fairly simple, twelve inch blocks that are suitable for beginning quilters. If you or someone you know is eager for a beginning quilt making experience, Saturday Sampler is a great way to get off to a good start.

Queen Sized Beauty

Our newest quilt is now feeling very much at home hanging in Threads of Tradition. The name, Kyoto Gardens sounds oriental, but our fabrics feel much more traditional in this spinning star representation. The pattern is taken from Judy Martins new book Stellar Quilts and it really is a standout design. Kits are available using the same fabrics that are in the quilt hanging in our shop, or you can select fat quarters in your own choice of colors. Either way, Kyoto Gardens is truly a stunning quilt.

Fabric, the Foundation of It All

All these beautiful quilts come from great patterns, but really, where would we be without all the fabulous fabrics from which we choose the perfect colors and visual textures to create the quilt we see in our dreams? Wonderful quilting cottons really are the basic building blocks that inspire us to continue creating. Thankfully, there are lots of talented fabric designers and manufacturers who keep supplying us with more choices than we can possibly purchase for one store - even though we sometimes wish we could have it all!

Some of our more recent arrivals show the diversity of fabric that is available. From African Beat by Hoffman, to Paper Dolls by Windham, to Moda’s Luna Notte, with its subtle yet sophisticated color palette and prints, I’ve mentioned only a few of the fabrics shown in this newsletter, but there is something for every taste.

The magic is revealed! Award winning and best selling author Paula Nadelstern has just released a Kaleidoscope Quilts Workbook that includes twelve projects - each one makes an artistic 20” square kaleidoscope block. Never before have there been this many of Paula’s kaleidoscope projects in one book! Also introducing 22.5 degree wedges (her narrowest wedges yet) to increase the beauty and intricacy of each kaleidoscope pattern. This workbook also includes a gallery of quilts from Paula’s exhibit at the Museum of American Folk Art for your enjoyment.

Mix and match blocks and center stars for up to 27 different quilts with Barbara Cline’s Star Struck Quilts book, using dazzling diamonds and traditional blocks. Build your star-making skills by starting out with simple patterns and move to more complex ones as you learn.

Let your imagination take flight with Flying Colors as you design quilts with free form shapes and flying geese. Author Gail Garber teaches you step-by-step techniques to create your own unique quilt designs, or to make any of the five bonus projects. Draft shapes such as flying geese, triangles, and diamonds to fill strips of fabric that weave in and out of your design. Easy paper-piecing instructions help you make all your designs more accurate, from landscapes to radiating sunlight to flowing ribbons.

One other new item from C&T publishing that seems to have many possible uses is Silicone Release Paper inspired by fusible appliqué artist Laura Wasilowski. Use this non-stick paper to trace, iron on transfer, release and cut out your appliqué shapes. Also trace and transfer over-sized patterns with ease since the packet contains ten 8.5” x 11’ sheets and two 17” x 22” sheets for both small and large patterns in one convenient package. Other creative uses include using the sheets as a handy non-stick work surface fro projects using mediums and adhesives, or protecting delicate art surfaces, as well as your iron and ironing board. The packet comes with a free project inside to get you started.

Jim Shore Gifts

The latest Jim Shore figurines just arrived in the shop this morning. Included in this shipment are a doghouse full of new dog figurines, a Hidden Scenes Angel and snowpeople ornaments. Each ornament features a different sport - football, basketball, baseball and hockey for all those athletes and sports fans on your Christmas list.

As any good school teacher knows, you can only pack so much into one presentation before the recipient’s mind begins to wander. I think I’ve gone past my limit in this newsletter, so I hope you have all found something of value and interest in the new products and opportunities I’ve presented. We look forward to seeing many of you at the shop hop, classes, or visiting the shop on a day of your choice this fall. We always love to see you again and hear about your latest quilting adventures!

Keep up the good work,   Linda
