Dear Quilting Friends,

As I write this, I am realizing that today (Monday) is the last official day of summer and autumn begins tomorrow. It has been a busy summer, with lots of weddings, including three nieces and nephews as well as a fun-filled schedule at Threads of Tradition. Before summer could get away from us, Jim and I along with his two brothers and sister-in-laws and a friend spent a week riding motorcycles to the Smoky Mountains and back. We rode a total of 1850 miles over lots of mountains and around hundreds of switchback turns, including the 318 turns in 11 miles on the infamous Dragon’s Tail and had a fantastic time. I know some of you have a hard time picturing me as a “motorcycle mama” so I’ve included a picture of our group at the Deal’s Gap sign at the top of the Dragon’s Tail. We have “helmet head” hair styles to prove that we really rode but we all look like we’re having fun, don’t we!?

Retreat for Progress

This past weekend, 24 dedicated quilters joined us at the Heritage Inn for our Fall Quilter's Retreat. Many of them had specific goals for finishing up quilts that had been promised long ago or gift items they wanted to have ready for Christmas. Everyone made great progress on their goals and many quilt tops were completed. From Friday morning to Sunday afternoon, they sewed and shopped, talked and ate, made new friends, inspired each other, and finished up many unfinished projects as well as new ones. Several people tried their hand at making border striped tablerunners after Linda Stuckey demonstrated that technique on Friday evening. By the time I took pictures on Sunday afternoon, many of the finished pieces had been taken down and packed away, but you can still see a few of the wonderful quilts that were completed during this retreat.

All in all, everyone had a great time and was reluctant to leave when the retreat ended on Sunday afternoon. At their request, we are now ready to begin taking registrations for the Spring Quilter's Retreat scheduled for March 5-6-7, 2010. Click on this link http://www.saudervillage.org/Hospitality/Quilt_Retreat_Reg.asp to print a registration form and mail or fax it to us and then you can relax, knowing that your table will be waiting for you in March! We welcome more quilters to join us; all you need is some projects to work on and a desire to have fun with other quilters. Come by yourself or with a group of friends, either way you are guaranteed to have a good time!

Autumn Colors Roadtrip

We are busy getting ready for our next big event, the Quilter’s Road Show Shop Hop scheduled for October 15-17. Those dates should be the perfect time to enjoy the beautiful fall colors on a road trip; both the colors outdoors and indoors as you visit seven wonderful quilt shops located along the Ohio turnpike. Each of the seven shops: Threads of Tradition in Archbold, Corner Quilts in Wauseon, Sonflower Quilts in Sylvania, The Door Mouse in Bettsville, Black Swamp Quilt Shoppe in Millbury, Sew Little Time in Norwalk, and Quilts and Kreations in South Amherst, has designed a pattern and published them in a book that is included in the price of your passport, along with chances to win prizes and spend a fantastic day with quilting friends. Books will be available at the first shop that stamps your passport.

The quilt we designed for the book is the Carefree Cruisin’ Braid. We will have three different die cut kits available—autumn colors as seen in the picture, a Christmas version, and a classy steel blue with golden tan colorway.

Passports are available now. The cost is $10.00—a great bargain for a book with seven original patterns and a day of fun and a chance at wonderful prizes! Even better, if you purchase your passport in September, the early bird special price is only $8.00, so stop in before the end of the month to sign up for the Quilter’s Road Show Shop Hop.

It's Back to School Time!

We are celebrating autumn with a great line up of classes for the month of October. All offerings still have a few spots available for additional students, so sign up soon for the class or classes of your choice and take on a new quilting adventure this fall. Saturday Sampler - There's Still Time to Join!

Stop in at Threads of Tradition soon to register for Saturday Sampler. Pick up your pattern and first fabric kit, sew the 12” block prior to the next session on October 10 and no one will even realize that you missed the first session on September 12—you’ll be right on track with everyone else. For more information on this year’s monthly demonstration, click on
http://www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/classschedule.asp#Saturday_Sampler to get all the details and see a picture of one possible way to set this quilt together. We always encourage creativity with your Saturday Sampler blocks, so you can choose to use them any way you please. In this case variety truly is the spice of life and is much more exciting than if everyone sews exactly the same quilt. So join us once a month, learn some handy piecing techniques and express yourself creatively!

Fabulous Fabric Finds

As always, exciting new fabrics with great possibilities keep arriving in the shop. I don’t know how designers keep coming up with better and better ideas all the time! The fabrics speak best for themselves, so I’ll just post the pictures with the fabric name underneath and let them talk to you. Of course, they are always better “in person” so for a really good look, come in and see them and visit with us!

Books and Patterns for Every Skill Level

Those of you who met Sharyn Craig during our Quilt Show in 2008 know that she is a teacher who loves fast, fun and forgiving techniques with spectacular results. In her new book Layer ‘em Up…there is something almost magical in the way these blocks just come together. If you’ve been looking for new patterns for community service quilts, or if you’ve always wanted to venture into art quilts but have been intimidated, or if you have been collecting Layer Cakes or even Charm Packs but didn’t know what to do with them—has Sharyn got the quilts for you!

Sizzle and Pop is an inspiring book that features quilts sewn from Bali Pops--color coordinated bundles of 2 ½” strips of Hoffman batik fabrics. Each striking quilt has its own personality and is sewn in a different “flavor” of Bali Pop. Three of the patterns can be completed very quickly and the other three require a bit more time and let you have fun playing with color and value. Let these patterns help you unleash your creativity!

Too cute! Have fun creating 100+ no-sew fabric crafts for kids either with children or for children. Each of the colorful projects uses heavy weight Fast 2 Fuse interfacing and your favorite novelty fabrics. This book guarantees hours of fun and oodles of projects some of which can be completed in just minutes. If you have fabric scraps and a child or grandchild who loves to craft, this book is chock-full of fun ways to get them started on a creative love affair with fabric!

Got A Notion?

Texture Magic is a steam activated shrinking fabric. Simply sew Texture magic to the back of your fabric, apply steam and the fabric will magically shrink 30% in all directions, creating a beautiful textured effect. Instructions are included in the package. Come see our samples in the shop!

Guidelines Finger Guards provide a ½ inch high protective barrier on any acrylic ruler. Three suction cups allow them to be firmly attached but easily moved from one ruler to another. Attach one to a 12in ruler or use both end-to-end on a 24in or on adjacent sides of a 12.5in square.

This tiny rotary blade glides smoothly wherever your finger is pointing. It easily cuts the thinnest & most delicate fabric or papers without skipping or tearing. Hold the cutter similar to how you hold a pencil. This item is disposable, blades cannot be replaced.

The Creative Grids 60 Degree Strip Ruler For 2 1/2in Strips & Triangles is designed to make cutting 2 1/2in wide strips quick and easy. The ruler side is 2 1/2in wide so that you can cut 2 1/2in wide strips as well as the triangles. Turn-a-Round the ruler and line up all the triangles along your strip of fabric and cut 14 pairs of 2in finished triangles at same time.

End of Historic Village Season and Fall Sale

The Historic Village will be closing for the season on Sunday, October 25. For us that means two things. First—until next spring we will be closed on Sundays after that date but we will continue to be open Monday – Saturday from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. And secondly, all the retail stores at the Village will be holding our annual Fall Sale from Tuesday, October 27 - Saturday, October 31, 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, so plan to visit us then to start your holiday shopping early!

Current Threads is Moving to a New Date!

Some of you may have noticed that you did not receive an issue of Current Threads that was dated September 2009. We did not skip a month, but have decided to send this e-newsletter closer to the end of each month rather than in the middle. Due to the date change, it makes more sense to share with you exciting news and events for the upcoming month (much like magazines do)! So, from now on, check your inbox for Current Threads around the 25th of every month.

Also, some recipients on our mailing list have had problems receiving the email version of Current Threads. So now, each month's issue of Current Threads will also be available for an entire year on the Threads of Tradition page on our website, located at: http://www.saudervillage.org/Shopping/quiltshop.asp If you - or anyone you know - is having trouble receiving the enewsletter, please let us know so that we can continue to work on the problem and in the meantime, be sure to check it out online!

Thank you for your interest in our shop and all we have to offer. We appreciate your friendship and your business as we keep learning and exploring the creative possibilities of quilting together!

                   Keep On Stitching,   Linda
