Dear Quilting Friends,
Sauder Village Quilt Show 2010 is now history, but what a show
it was! I hope you were all able to join us for at least one day
during the show to see it for yourselves. I heard many comments
that the show gets better every year and that is a compliment to
all the quilt makers who bring beautiful quilts to share with
everyone. Many, many thanks to everyone who exhibited wonderful
quilts for all to enjoy and I hope you are already planning your
entries for next year! If you haven’t seen the winning quilts
yet, be sure to visit our website at
www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltshow_winners10.asp
to see pictures of the 1st place and top prize
winners including the people’s choice winner and a list of all
other award winners.
All the ladies demonstrating quilting techniques were busy
stitching and talking to all the guests who stopped by to look
and ask questions. What a great opportunity to learn new
quilting skills, sometimes from the designers themselves! This
year Marcia Derse came to the show on Thursday and Saturday to
talk about the process of designing fabric and Sharon Moore
demonstrated her unique pattern for T-Shirts Gone Crazy.
Sharon Schamber’s classes were filled to capacity and everyone
came away with their heads spinning with new ideas, tips and
techniques. Sharon very freely shared all her secrets that make
her quilts top prize winners at national shows like the American
Quilter’s Society show at Paducah. Many of her techniques will
help her students to step up the quality of their quilt making a
notch or two.
The
2011 Quilt Show is scheduled for April 26 – May 1 with Nancy
Prince as our guest artist. Nancy’s specialty is thread
painting. On the opening page of her website she says “Thread
painting and I had a natural love affair from the first stitch.
Being able to capture a favorite photo or familiar scene in
thread and fabric has been an amazing adventure for me, one in
which I would like to share with you.” Nancy will be offering
workshops for all skill levels Wednesday, April 27 – Saturday
April 30. Visit her website
www.nancyprince.com
to see some introductory videos, photos of some of her work
and the types of workshops she offers. Online registrations will
be available beginning
Wednesday, January 12 on our website. I’ll be sure to remind you
in the December and January Current Threads so you don’t miss
out on this wonderful opportunity to take classes from a
world-renown quilt artist right here at Sauder Village.
Nifty Notions
We
will continue to stock the tools and notions that were promoted
during the quilt show, so if you weren’t able to pick them up
during the show, stop back to visit and we should still have the
items you are looking for. Sharon Schamber’s wash away appliqué
stabilizer was in great demand and we now have another 100 yard
bolt of that in stock, so you can have as much as you want! Also
her Magic Bobbin Washers that help your bobbin spin freely in
the bobbin case and her Quilt Halos that everyone loved for
machine quilting are in stock. Other popular items that we used
in demonstrations include the Steady Betty pressing surfaces
and
the Supreme Slider, now with a new tacky back that grips and is
easy to remove. Also ask about the Purple Thang for “pushing,
poking, pulling, p-fudging, p-turning, p-stuffing—it makes its
own uses!” Another new handy notion that is brand new is the
Needle Sharpening Pad—just sew through the pad to sharpen
needles. It works on all pins as well as hand and machine
needles so don’t replace it…sharpen it!
Fabulous Fabrics
Some quilters are gadget girls and some are not, but very few of
us can resist fabrics that attract our eye and make us catch our
breath! New summer fabric collections continue to arrive and
include new rayon batiks for clothing, a 60” wide cotton batik
that is designed for outdoor cushions and is fade resistant, 60”
wide soft textured Fireside backing from Moda that would be
perfect and cuddly on the back of throw-sized quilts, patriotic
fabrics, traditional collections, and even novelties like the
new Maxine fabrics by Robert kaufman. If you love Maxine, you
need this fabric—what a hoot! Also, Christmas fabrics are just
beginning to arrive, with most holiday groups scheduled for June
delivery. We’ve pictured some of the newest arrivals, but stop
in to see them in all their glory! For those of you who have
been waiting, the Poky Little Puppy fabrics are back in stock, along
with a Little Golden Book cloth book of the Saggy, Baggy
Elephant.

Patterns for Perusing
On
the home decorating scene, the Classic Roman Shade
pattern by More Splash than Cash opens up lots of possibilities
for creating window shades to match or coordinate with quilts.
This pattern has instructions that fit most windows, is easy to
sew and the shades can be lined or unlined.
If you can’t do without your microwave potato cooking bag, there
is a new pattern for a Corn on the Cob Steamer, just in
time for the peak corn on the cob season. This simple to sew
pattern makes great gifts for all your gardening friends, or
anyone who enjoys eating fresh produce.

Atkinson Designs new Fire Escape pattern makes an
eye-catching quilt in any of the three sizes…either lap, twin or
queen. I have seen this pattern made up in the Clothworks
America the Beautiful fabric that is pictured above and it was
stunning! Select your own favorite fabrics to make a unique, yet
quick to sew quilt with a modern twist.
Flying High is an easy to piece, easy to quilt lap, wall
or bed size quilt with an attractive 3-D effect. It features all
straight seams, the curved effect is achieved by inserting the
accent fabric in the seam and then folding it and stitching it
down on top of the triangle shapes. This versatile design can be
sewn from two groups of five fabrics each. The coordinated
accent should stand out either in color or value to get the most
dramatic effect in this design.
Books
Nancy Halvorsen is famous for her quilt books
featuring a large variety of projects suited to her fabric
lines. Garden Song is no exception with patterns for
quilts, aprons, tea towels, hot pads, pillows, table runner, mug
cozies and banners. A garden is a symphony of color, fragrance
and song. Create your own garden wit these projects to enjoy and
share.
Make
your next quilt in a jiffy! Simply take five minutes to choose
five fabrics, stack them, cut them simultaneously, and you’re
ready to sew! Kathy Brown’s new book. Take 5 Quilts from
Just 5 Fabrics shows you the relax-and-have-fun way to create
visually stunning quilts. Create a lap-sized quilt this
weekend—experienced quilters can finish in a day!
What could be more fun than a small quilt from 5” charm squares?
A large one just like it from 10” layer cake squares! With
Schnibbles Times Two you can enjoy twelve pairs of beautiful
quilts, with a large and small quilt in each design from the
creative mind behind Miss Rosie’s Quilt Company. Are you
wondering about the definition of a Schnibble? It’s a little bit
or
leftover—as in those fabric bits you’re ready to use up!
Put a new spin on quilting with twelve fun and unique quilts in
Pinwheel Party! With variations on pinwheels, windmills,
whirligigs and other favorite twirling blocks, these twelve
dynamic quilts will set your fabric in motion! Use a planned
color scheme or give your quilts a scrappy look—the variety
offers something for everyone. These quilts are easy enough for
confident beginners, yet appealing enough for experts.
Hopefully true summer weather is just around the corner. With
beautiful weather in April and then rain on eleven of the first
eighteen days in May, it feels as though April and May have
switched identities in Northwest Ohio! We are very grateful for
the nice weather we had during the quilt show but are also
definitely ready for sunny skies and warmer temperatures so we
can enjoy the outdoors and get our gardens growing.
But
then, I guess the rainy days are good sewing days, so maybe I
shouldn’t wish them away! So rain or shine, we’re always happy
to see you at Threads of Tradition, because we know that every
season is really quilting season!
Happy Quilting!
Linda
