Natives & Newcomers... An
Introduction for Teachers
Whether you have
visited Sauder Village in person, or if you are exploring the
Village for the first time on-line, we want to be sure you know
about our most recent addition. Natives and Newcomers: Ohio
in Transition, 1803-1839 is both an indoor and outdoor
exhibit, which opened on June 14, 2003. This exhibit serves as
a natural bridge to the Historic Sauder Village experience that
school groups have enjoyed for years. With this addition, we
have extended our time line to show what happened in the daily
lives of the Natives and Newcomers in this region prior to the
first European settlement.
The Natives and
Newcomers experience begins in our Museum Building where
visitors can walk through a timeline showing events that changed
the lives of the Native Americans of this region. The Council
Oak Carving is on display here as well. The experience
continues as visitors leave the Museum and walk into a
re-created environment and settlement that may have existed in
this part of Ohio in the early 1800’s. It was in this type of
settlement where trade encouraged interaction between the
cultures of the Native Americans and the European Newcomers.

The settlement
portion of our exhibit consists of Native dwellings including
sugarloaf, dome-shaped and conical wigwams, as well as a log
trading post. The creation of this two-acre environment also
included the planting of over 500 native trees as well as other
heirloom and historic vegetation. All of this, along with
gardens, fields, and demonstrations by costumed interpreters
help to bring this vivid re-creation to life!
