Featured Exhibits...
Barbara Carroll
Karl & Mary Jo Gimber
Esther & Judith Knipe
Featured Exhibits pay tribute to the work of outstanding contemporary and historic rug hookers. Each of these extensive collections offers a wonderful opportunity to closely study techniques, colors, designs, and the in-depth story of each of these talented artists.
A Gallery Talk or Walk will be offered for each of the Featured Exhibits so that you may gain insight directly from the artists on the designs, techniques, stories, and background of the work in each collection. (More information on the Gallery Talks and Walks is on the Workshop page.)
Barbara Carroll, Pennsylvania.
Well-known and loved primitive hooked rug designer, author, teacher, and mentor; Barbara is an authority on textured wools using cut #8 and larger to recreate the look of antique rugs. We are honored to exhibit this collection of work, which features the very first rug she hooked 25 years ago to her most recent pieces, and pay tribute to such a wonderful leader in the art of primitive rug hooking.
Karl & Mary Jo Gimber, Pennsylvania.
This husband and wife team have taken their mutual interest in American history and the love for all things old and translated it into hooked rugs. Together they have created more than 70 historic sign rugs, representing 1700’s – 1800’s tavern, trade, and farm signs, historic flags, gravestones, old weathervanes, and folk art, with political messages, historical references, religious themes, and humor.
Esther & Judith Knipe, Vermont & New York.
This artistic collection features the work of a mother and daughter, each having her own unique interests and style. Esther (1907-1988), a mentor to Patty Yoder, focused on Geometrics, Abstracts, American Indian designs, Picasso’s Cubism, and Matisse’s Fauvism. Judith, an editor and author, designed and hooked wearable hooked pieces and handbags sold in New York City Boutiques.

Celebration of Hand-Hooked Rugs XXII
This exclusive exhibit presents an opportunity to see the award winning hooked rugs featured in the annual publication by Rug Hooking Magazine, as the issue debuts at Rug Hooking Week. New this year is the Primitive Category which joins the Original, Commercial, and Adaptation categories. These rugs are outstanding examples of design, color, and technique representing the current trends and interests of rug hooking artists around the world.
Eye See You II
Judy Carter and Leonard Feenan developed, designed and organized this exhibit. From the original 2’ x 3’ rug designed by Leonard and hooked by Judy, the project grew into a 9’ x 13’ rug composed of 38 individual rugs which were then hooked by McGown certified or trained teachers. This stunning collection focuses on hooking realistic animal eyes and the fur or feathers surrounding the eye. (Collection featured in Rug Hooking Magazine Jan/Feb 2012).
Retreat Teachers
This exhibit represents the creative, innovative, inspiring, and artistic work by the teachers who are leading this year’s retreat classes.
Zodiac Collection
Twelve fiber artists from seven states, Australia, Canada, and England interpret their specific celestial sign. Curated by Susan Feller, the Zodiac collection portrays contemporary uses of the traditional art form with a wide variety of rug hooking techniques. (Collection featured in Rug Hooking Magazine Jan/Feb 2012).

2012 Rug Hooking Challenge
"Olympic Grandeur"...
From July 27th to August 12th, 2012, the Summer Olympics will take place in London, England. The Olympics will end just days before Sauder Village opens the doors to the 2012 Rug Hooking Week Exhibit. One can’t help but be drawn to the television to watch the athletes, who have trained so hard and for so long, as they compete to prove their talents, skills, and athleticism while representing their beloved countries.
Which of the 35 Summer Olympic events is your favorite? What does the harmony of so many countries working together mean to you? Which athlete do you admire? Are you amazed by the opening and closing ceremonies? What interests you about the host country? What is the historic background and reference? Express your feelings and creativity in your “Olympic Grandeur” Theme Challenge Rug.
Theme Challenge Requirement…. Your project must include each of the colors found in the Olympic Rings: Blue, Black, Red, Yellow, and Green at least once, as well as any additional colors of their choosing. Various techniques and embellishments are welcome.
Which countries and athletes will bring home the medals? Which rug hooker will take home the 2012 Theme Challenge People’s Choice Award? Let the games begin!
Annual “Theme Challenge” Exhibit Each year we select a special theme for our “Theme Challenge” Exhibit. Everyone is welcome to participate in this challenge (as in our main exhibit, you are not required to be a retreat student).
