Challenge Guidelines

Threads of Tradition at Historic Sauder Village sponsors the... Quilt Challenge 2012

Theme: "Star Light, Star Bright"...

Each challenge entrant will create a quilt design that includes at least four Ohio Star blocks.  When piecing the Ohio Star blocks used in the quilt, you may use only one challenge fabric colorway of your choice plus light neutrals.  Adding light neutrals is optional but if you choose to use them, they may be white, cream, taupe or gray and are not limited to the cream and gray included in the challenge fabrics.  The Ohio Star blocks do not all need to be exactly the same as long as the fabrics in your star blocks come from one colorway of the Challenge fabrics.  Once the original Ohio Star blocks are sewn, each artist may add any color or colors from the Challenge fabrics to complete their quilt in any manner of the artist’s choosing.

 The Ohio Star blocks can be any size and do not all need to be the same size.  Use the chart below to find dimensions to vary the block size if you prefer.

Accept this challenge to not only create the one colorway and light neutral Ohio Star blocks, but also to choose a color scheme and setting for the rest of the quilt.  Play with color and you’ll be amazed at how you can transform the entire look of the quilt.  You may choose to use only one colorway or as many as all the available colorways in the entire challenge collection.

Fabrics...

For the 2012 challenge we have grouped the entire Bear Essentials fabric line from P&B into eleven colorways.  Each colorway will include six fat quarters of a single color, from light to dark values, except for the black/gray colorway which contains only four fat quarters.  To qualify for the challenge, all fabrics on the front of the quilt and binding must be from the Bear Essentials fabric line, except for additional light neutral fabrics of the artist’s choice that may be used in the Ohio Star blocks. 

We’d love to have you visit us to personally pick up your fabric packets, but if that is not possible, challenge fabrics may be viewed online and ordered by calling Threads of Tradition Quilt Shop at 419-445-9610 or 800-590-9755. Two fabric packets of six fat quarters each can be shipped to you for $42.98 including tax, shipping and handling. Orders for more than two fabric packets and/or additional yardage of any selected fabrics will be priced accordingly. 

Size...

Maximum 36” x 36”/ Minimum 24” x 24”.  Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.

Registration...

Please register for the challenge by completing the quilt registration form which will be available online January 11, 2012 at www.saudervillage.org/Creativity/quiltfair_RegTag.asp. Your challenge quilt must be pre-registered and can be included on the same form as any additional quilts you are entering in other categories. Check in for all pre-registered quilts, including Challenge quilts, will be Sunday, April 29 from 1:30 – 4:00 pm.  If it is impossible for you to hand deliver your entry, please complete the special shipping instruction form that is also available online and mail that form with your entry.

All qualifying Star Light, Star Bright Challenge quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit in the lobby of Founder’s Hall during the week of Quilt Show 2012. Judging will be completed prior to opening of the Quilt Show. All Challenge quilts must include a cloth label with the name of the quilt and the owner’s name and address, sewn to the back of the entry.

Pick-up...

Sunday, May 6, at 4:30 p.m. or Monday, May 7 between 9:00 a.m.– 10:30 a.m. unless other arrangements are made. All entries must remain for the entire length of the show.
