Challenge Guidelines...

Threads of Tradition at Historic Sauder Village sponsors the...
Village Quilt Challenge 2009

Theme... "Simply Chic"... Each entrant will create a patchwork design sewn with only squares and/or rectangles. Each entry must be pieced and must be quilted either by hand and/or machine. Addition of appliqué or other embellishment of the artist's choice is encouraged but not required. In this Challenge, we are looking for originality, creativity, great design and workmanship. Originality does not mean that you cannot use a traditional quilt pattern... you may choose to do so. Challenge quilts will be judged on the choices you make in color, placement and imaginative ways that you use and combine fabrics, as well as the quality of workmanship. All 2009 Challenge quilts are subject to the same entry guidelines as all other categories in the quilt show.

Fabrics... For the 2009 Challenge, we have selected two color-ways (Blue/Green/Espresso and Pink/Chocolate) of the City Girl fabrics designed by Kitty Yoshida and printed by Benartex. Each challenge packet will contain one half-yard of the oversized daisy fabric, one fat quarter each of the large vine, oversize paisley, peacock, bar code stripe and large chrysanthemum fabrics. Additional coordinating fat quarters included in each packet will be... three colors of wavy stripes, one rim dot and one squared bolts print. Since this fabric group has fourteen different fabrics in each color-way, the color of the coordinates may vary from package to package, but the primary prints will remain the same in each packet. Each entrant may choose one or more color-ways to include in their challenge quilt. To qualify for the Challenge, each entry must include an easily recognizable piece of at least eight different fabrics from the City Girl fabric line. Only City Girl fabrics by Benartex may be used in the challenge, no others may be added on the front of the quilt and binding. Backings may be of any fabric desired by the artist.

We would love to have you visit us to personally pick up your fabric packet, but if that is not possible, we will send your challenge fabrics to you for $36.98 including tax, shipping and handling per packet. If additional yardages are needed, all challenge fabrics may be viewed online and ordered by calling Threads of Tradition at 419.445.9610 or 800.590.9755, with the style and color number of each fabric and the yardages required.

Size... Maximum 36" x 36" and Minimum 24" x 24"
Your quilt can be any shape as long as the outside dimensions fall within these guidelines.

Registration... Please register for the Challenge by completing the quilt registration form, which will be available December 2, 2008. Your Challenge quilt must be pre-registered and can be included on the same form as any additional quilts you are entering in other categories. Check in for all pre-registered quilts, including Challenge quilts, will be Sunday, April 26, 2009 from 1:30 – 4:00 PM. If it is impossible for you to hand deliver your entry, please complete the special shipping instruction form, that is also available online December 2, 2008... and mail that form with your entry.

All qualifying Challenge quilts will be hung together in a special exhibit in the lobby of Founder's Hall during the week of Quilt Fair 2009. Judging will be completed prior to the opening of Quilt Fair. All Challenge quilts must include a cloth label with the name of the quilt, the owner's name and address sewn to the back of the entry. Hanging sleeves are no longer necessary.

Pick-up... Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 4:30 PM or Monday, May 4, 2009 between 9:00 – 10:30 AM unless other arrangements are made. All entries must remain for the entire length of the show.
