Every year
nearly 400 quilts are displayed full-length in Founder’s Hall in
one of several categories. This annual event is made possible by
quilters who are willing to submit their beautiful work for the
exhibit. NEW this year is a special “Masters” category,
featuring the quilts of our guest instructor and others artists
who qualify.
Quilt
designer, author, and teacher Nancy Odom has several books and numerous patterns
in publication, with more pattern and book ideas always in the works. Nancy
co-authored the popular Elm Creek Quilts book for C&T Publications and
her quilts have been featured in several other C&T books. Nancy has also
designed three popular fabric collections for P&B Textiles: Azalea Trail,
Gather Sunshine, and Vintage Rose. Also among her creations are
Quilter's Gloves for the machine quilter. Her company, Timid Thimble
Creations, markets her line of products.
Nancy has appeared on three episodes
of Simply Quilts with Alex Anderson and on America Sews with Sue Hausmann. She
is a featured teacher and lecturer at quilt shows, quilt guilds, and quilt shops
around the country. Nancy's designs have also been featured in McCall's Quilting
Magazine and For The Love of Quilting magazine. Nancy designed and quilted A
Mother's Legacy, the 2005 International Quilt Association donation quilt.
She has also created quilts for P&B Textiles, Hoffman Fabrics, Benartex Fabrics,
Bernina Sewing Machines, and Viking Sewing Machines.
Having completed her first
quilt at the age of 17, Nancy credits her grandmother’s love of quilting for
inspiring her at such a young age. She has vivid memories of sneaking
downstairs after “bedtime” as a child to watch her grandmother appliqué a quilt
top. Nancy was amazed and fascinated by every stitch. Today, the very quilt
that inspired that little girl has a proud place among Nancy’s own quilted
creations.

Definitions...
Masters: In order to qualify, quilt artists must have traveled nationally
to teach and have published books or patterns. The
exhibit director will personally contact all Masters artists
to discuss arrangements for this special display. This
category is for exhibit only and will not be judged.
"Simply Chic"Challenge: Plan now to participate in this year's
Village Quilt Challenge. Stop in Threads of Tradition at Sauder Village for Challenge guidelines and a fabric kit. If
you are not able to visit our shop in person, Challenge
guidelines and all available challenge fabrics can be viewed
on the Challenge web page, and then ordered either by e-mail
or telephone. We will gladly ship whatever you need... right
to your door.
Pieced: Piecing predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.
Appliqué: Appliqué predominates over other
techniques in amount or effect.
Mixed Media: A quilt where two or more major
construction techniques, not including quilting or trapunto,
are used to develop the design of the top.
Open Class: Quilting that uses one or more special
techniques such as whole cloth, embroidery, cross-stitch,
painting or other surface design techniques not included in
the categories above.
Baby Quilts: Crib size or smaller quilt that is designed for a young child.
Contemporary Art Quilts: (any size) A contemporary artwork exploring and expressing aesthetic concerns
which retains, through materials or technique, a clear
relationship to the folk art quilt from which it descends.
The work must possess the basic structural characteristics
of a quilt. It must be predominantly fabric or fabric-like
material and must be composed of at least two full and
distinct layers - a face layer and a backing layer. The face
and backing layers must be held together by hand- or
machine-made functional quilting stitches or other elements
that pierce all layers and are distributed throughout the
surface of the work.
Miniatures:
Scaled down version of a large quilt design.
Total size 400 sq. inches or less.
Youth Quilts:
Quilts made by youth ages 18 and younger can be submitted
for this special category. Quilt tops must have been sewn by
the youth and can be quilted or tied. All other registration
guidelines apply. Please note the quilt-maker's age and
other interesting information on the entry form. We
encourage youth to embrace the art of quilt making and share
their developing talents! This category is for exhibit
only and will not be judged.
Entry Requirements and Guidelines...
All quilts must be pre-registered prior to Quilt Show.
A maximum of three quilts
per exhibitor may be entered in the exhibition. Due to space considerations,
registration forms will be accepted until 4:00 PM, Monday, April 20, 2009, or
until our limit is reached. All quilts must be pre-registered
to Quilt Fair (You can also complete and submit your
registration form online...) and adhere to the
following exhibit guidelines...
All
entries must...
Consist
of three layers; two layers of cloth filled with “batting” material and
held together by a stitched design.
Never
have been shown in previous Quilt Shows at Sauder Village.
Include
significant piecing and/or appliqué which affects the overall design if
preprinted panels are included in the quilt top.
Be
quilted, not tied, and no comforter loft batting or big stitch quilts.
Be
quilted, either by hand or machine or both, in a process separate from the
construction process.*
May be
embellished with material other than cloth.
Remain
in the exhibit for the entire show until pickup of quilts on Sunday, May 3
at 4:30pm.
Rag
quilts are not eligible for entry into this show.
The
completed Quilt
Exhibit Tag form must be
pinned (use straight pins) to the front left edge, halfway up the
quilt. For wall quilts, pin the form at the bottom left of the quilt. Please
fold your quilt so that the form can be easily viewed for check-in.
In
order to qualify for the judging competition, the quilt exhibitor must have
had some part in the making of the quilt (Either constructing the quilt
top, quilting or both). Purchased quilts, inherited quilts and gift
quilts may be entered for exhibit only but will not be judged. Also, any
quilt maker who, for any reason, would prefer to enter his/her quilt "for
exhibit only" is welcome to do so. "For exhibit only" and judged
quilts will be hung together by category and the same entry guidelines will
apply equally to both. On your registration form and exhibit tags, please be
sure to indicate whether each quilt is to be entered into the judging
competition or as "for exhibit only".
Quilt artists who have
traveled nationally to teach and have published books or patterns
must register in the new “Masters” category. The exhibit director will
personally contact all Masters artists to discuss arrangements for this
special display.
The Masters and Youth
categories are for exhibit only and will not be judged.
*The
starred items do not apply to the Contemporary Art Quilts category.
Due to the
way the quilts are hung, it is not necessary to sew a sleeve onto your quilt.
Incomplete,
torn, soiled, framed or mounted quilts will not qualify or be accepted for the
exhibit.
Please Note... We
have met our limit in each quilt category except the Simply Chic
Challenge and Youth Quilts.
Complete one
registration form
per exhibitor.
Forms can be submitted online,
via fax or mail.
Pre-registration form must be
received before 4:00 PM, Monday, April 20, 2009, or until our limit is
reached due to space considerations.
