Every year nearly 400 quilts are displayed full-length in Founder’s Hall in one of several categories. This annual event is made possible by those who are willing to submit one or more beautiful quilts for the exhibit.

Featured Teacher...

Sharyn Craig, El Cajon, CA...  www.sharyncraig.com

When Sharyn Craig walked into her first quilting class in the fall of 1978, she had no idea how that simple action would change the rest of her life. She had always loved to sew and do crafts. In fact, she had been a Home Economics major in college, graduating with a degree in Clothing and Textiles. Just attending one quilting class made it clear what all that training had been leading up to.

Today she teaches, lectures and writes about her passion, quiltmaking, and has authored twelve books. She also has been a regular contributor to Traditional Quiltworks magazine, having originated the Design Challenge column. In 1985, The Professional Quilter Magazine named her Quilt Teacher of the Year.

Going to the flannel wall and playing with the blocks is Sharyn's favorite aspect of making a quilt. She has always enjoyed figuring out how to set blocks, what colors to use with them and how to resolve the problems and challenges that those blocks represent. Frequently inspired by a quilt that she has already made, she likes to use that same setting with a different set of blocks. She challenges herself to make this next quilt look different from the original one. Sharyn is probably best known for her encouragement of students to be creative in their own quilts. She brings her encouraging style and unique way of working with blocks to us as she presents workshops at Quilt Fair 2008.

Appliqué Appliqué predominates over other techniques in amount or effect.

Mixed Media A quilt where two or more major construction techniques, not including quilting or trapunto, are used to develop the design of the top.

Entry Requirements and Guidelines...
All quilts must be pre-registered prior to Quilt Fair.

A maximum of four quilts per exhibitor may be entered in the exhibition. Due to space considerations, registration forms will be accepted until 4:00 PM, Monday, April 21, 2008, or until our limit is reached. All quilts must be pre-registered to Quilt Fair (You can also complete and submit your registration form online...) and adhere to the following exhibit guidelines...

All entries must...

  • Consist of three layers; two layers of cloth filled with “batting” material and held together by a stitched design.

  • Never have been shown in previous Quilt Fairs at Sauder Village.

  • Include significant piecing and/or appliqué which effects the overall design if preprinted panels are included in the quilt top.

  • Be quilted, not tied, and no comforter loft batting or big stitch quilts.

  • Be quilted, either by hand or machine, in a process separate from the construction process.*

  • May be embellished with material other than cloth.

  • Remain in the exhibit for the entire show until pickup of quilts on Sunday, May 4 at 4:30pm.

  • Rag quilts are not eligible for entry into this show.

  • The completed Quilt Exhibit Tag form must be pinned (use straight pins) to the front left edge, halfway up the quilt. For wall quilts, pin the form at the bottom left of the quilt. Please fold your quilt so that the form can be easily viewed for check-in.

  • In order to qualify for the judging competition, the quilt exhibitor must have had some part in the making of the quilt (Either constructing the quilt top, quilting or both). Purchased quilts, inherited quilts and gift quilts may be entered for exhibit only but will not be judged. Also, any quilt maker who, for any reason, would prefer to enter his/her quilt "for exhibit only" is welcome to do so. "For exhibit only" and judged quilts will be hung together by category and the same entry guidelines will apply equally to both. On your registration form and exhibit tags, please be sure to indicate whether each quilt is to be entered into the judging competition or as "for exhibit only".

*The starred items do not apply to the Contemporary Art Quilts category.

Due to the way the quilts are hung, it is not necessary to sew a sleeve onto your quilt.

Incomplete, torn, soiled, framed or mounted quilts will not qualify or be accepted for the exhibit.

ALL QUILTS FOR THE EXHIBIT MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED
