Special Guest Artist: Vic Hood Vic Hood

Since he started carving more than 20 years ago, Vic Hood has become accomplished in the art of transforming wood into highly-intricate, full-sized human busts.  Mentored for several years by Larry Rogers and the late John Burke, Vic worked many years to perfect his craft before becoming a teacher. With teaching being his primary passion, Vic enjoys sharing wisdom and techniques with his students.

Vic is president of Leatherwood, Inc., which specializes in historic restoration. In that capacity, Vic has restored several national landmarks, presidential houses, and museums.

Vic’s carvings have earned Best of Show at several national shows, including the Dayton Artistry in Wood show. His Black Lung piece earned first runner-up Best of Show at the 2011 International Woodcarvers Congress and he was honored by Woodcarving Illustrated as their 2011 Woodcarver of the Year.

Vic was selected to create an ornament for the White House in 2001. He is also a founder of Leipers Fork Carving Club in Leipers Fork, Tennessee.  He is the co-author, with Jack Williams, of Carving Found Wood

Vic teaches throughout the country at large and small venues, and we are delighted that he’ll be sharing his passion for teaching and woodcarving at our 2012 Woodcarver’s Show & Sale!

Carving the Human Bust with Vic Hood

Dates:  Wednesday, October 24; Thursday, October 25; and Friday, October 26, 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (with 1 hour lunch break)
Instructor:  Special Guest Artist, Vic Hood
Location:  Sauder Heritage Inn
Class Fee:  $265.00 / $250 Sauder Village Members
Minimum / Maximum:  9 / 12

In this three-day workshop, you will learn to carve a human bust, using blanks that will be ca. 15” high and 8” to 12” wide.  You may do any subject of your choice in this class, but if there is something special you would like to include in the piece, you will need to contact Vic prior to the class so he can customize your blank (i.e. hats or similar paraphernalia would have to be allowed for in developing the blank.)   This is not a portraiture class, so therefore, you cannot do a specific individual.  (Portraiture takes a considerable amount of time and is not possible in the time frame we have.

Subjects to consider are American Indian, mountain men, cowboys, sea captains, etc.  Vic will bring a variety of models that can be used for guidance. You are encouraged to design your own pieces and do something that you are interested in, rather than something Vic is interested in.  There will be strong emphasis on form development, design, movement, and artistic quality added to the piece. This is a mallet class. Vic will bring extra tools for the students so there is no need to purchase tools for the class. Vic will also bring a carving stand for each student.

The class is open to both beginners and experienced carvers.
